Who We Are.

Have you ever wondered when you drive down the streets of any given town why there are so many different churches?  According to many sources, there are over 30,000 different denominations in the world today.  One popular website, Wikipedia, sets the number at over 38,000!

How is it that all those who profess to be following Jesus are divided into so many groups?  “Is Christ divided?” is the question the Apostle Paul asked when he was writing to the church at Corinth (I Corinthians 1:13).  Paul by inspiration of God wrote that the church should not be divided and that we should work together in unity as followers of Jesus (I Corinthians 1:10Ephesians 4:313).  After all, “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:4-6).  This is what we believe and practice.

At Clark Avenue Church of Christ, we do not believe we are the only Christians, but we want to be Christians only. The Bible, God’s Word, is our guide and final authority – not creeds, traditions, or denominational edicts. We want to speak where the Bible speaks, and be silent where the Bible is silent. We want to call Bible things by Bible names. Jesus said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). It is our desire to follow Him and only Him. We wear the name “Christian.” Our church is his, “Church of Christ.” We follow only His teachings, for it will be His teachings which shall judge us in the end (John 12:48-50).  We invite you to go along with us on our journey with the Lord!
